DEATH AND
DOMINATION CHAPTER 9 THE SPY
Odoko peered through the
decorative foliage watching for Arrogan Rapture to come into the
courtyard from the casino. Odoko's observation skills made him the
perfect clandestine agent. He missed very little with eyes that could
penetrated the blackest of nights. No cleverly concealed odor escaped
his keen olfactory sense, No low whisper too muffled for his sharp
ears.
Of particular note a secret
liaison between a werewolf and a vampire. If only he could get into
Barron's office what juicy bits await behind those guarded doors. A
problem that so far he'd not been able to overcome but he'd only been
on the job a short time. The ability to blend in with the background was a useful tool but now he would need more than camouflage if he wanted to get closer to the elusive Rapture. Forbearance would soon pay off.
Shortly after sundown the crowd began to grow as the night dwellers emerged from there shelters. The wolf and his flower child companion had returned from a walk in the desert. They’d gone upstairs but she had come back alone only minutes later. To most this went unnoticed but Odoko saw everything and no detail was unimportant. Akar the Egyptian was not the only one willing to pay for information. He rubbed his hands together, a nervous little habit he indulged in at the anticipation of rewards.
The one called Steve had come down after an hour and gone to the bar. He ordered a double Chivas on the rocks and downed it. He signaled the bartender for another and swallowed it. This action caught the attention of Kalina, no stranger to men drowning their sorrows.
Quicker than a lynx pouncing on a snow bunny was Kalina, when a handsome young man was throwing down shots. “Bartender may I bother you for a duplicate of what he's having. Mine's not getting the job done and he looks like he knows what he's doing.” Sitting at the end of the bar she intercepted the drink and moved to sit next to Steve. “In case you're wondering who the gorgeous woman next you is, my name is Kalina Draco. And you are?”
Steve acknowledged her presence with a nod. “I don't mean to be rude but I'm not drinking for fun tonight.”
“Me neither. Fun is the last thing on my mind so don't get the wrong idea sailor. I've already got man trouble I want to forget. Oh what an evil bastard too. Jesus-H-Christ he infuriates me to no end. Damn! There I go again babbling on about him. I'm really sorry to bust in on you. I should just keep my mouth shut and let it go. I can see you have your own problems so I'll slide off and find my own rock to crawl under.” She patted his hand gently and started to leave.
A warm sensation swept up his arm and washed over him“Your hand was warm, how did you do that?”
“Warm? Oh, you thought I was a …” She flashed him a disarming smile and squeezed his hand. “No---No. I drink the hard stuff out of a well aged barrel.”
Several drinks later, Odoko's attention was diverted to the casino entrance when two vampires exited. One was the werewolf's other female friend. She was talking with Aaron the gate keeper.
“Why can't I see Barron now? I have critical information for him.”
“Look he's got a big counsel meeting coming up in an hour in the meeting room. You can see him then.”
“Maybe I don't want to blab what I know to everybody.”
“Well what do you want me to about it?”
“Nothing Aaron you've done all your capable of now go to...” she abruptly paused.
“Go what?”
“Never mind we're done here.” Her eyes were locked on Steve drinking with Kalina. She had not felt jealousy over a man in over half a century so it was understandable that she did not recognize the feeling. All she knew at that moment was a sudden ache gripped her heart as if a powerful hand were crushing it.
Kalina tapped the bar for a refill for both glasses. “Now this rounds on me, you already got the last four.”
Steve chuckled, okay you win.” The drinks came and before she could pay he slapped a bill on the bar and laughed.
She giggled. “You're so bad, I'm quitting after this one. I can tell you're going to be trouble.”
He stiffened and tried to look serious. “Alright I'll be good I promise.” Then he leaned over and stole a quick kiss from her unguarded lips.
“You devil. You call that being good?” She scolded him with her words but her body leaned against him; long blonde hair fell across his brawny shoulder.
“Steven.” Kalina slowly straightened on her stool as Steve spun around to face Adrianna. I thought you needed time to think, alone?”
He was not entirely surprised to see her but the liquor had his tongue in a knot. The best he could muster was a shrug.
Kalina on the other hand had a great deal of experience with jealous girlfriends. Generally she had three basic plays. She could act innocent and walk away, but this guy was too good to let go. She could seduce the woodstock groupy into a me'nage 'a trois, but this girl didn't look like she was in a mood to party. Which left only one option.
“He is thinking sugar and he's a nasty boy for what he's thinking.”
“I didn't ask for your opinion.”
Kalina grinned. “Nope, so I'm gonna shut up and keep it to myself hippy. We'll just let the man decide if he wants a hot blooded woman to curl up with or if he'd rather snuggle with a cold crypt crawler.”
Adrianna had been insulted many times and never let it get her riled but something in Kalina's green glare ignited a fire inside her. Yet another unfamiliar emotional feeling. Rage! In an instant her claws flicked out like ten switchblades. With a catty screech she went for those green eyes. Steve was already between them and reacted on impulse. He grabbed Adrianna and held her back. A reckless move for she raked him across the arm tearing shirt and flesh.
Kalina had anticipated the hero's reaction and never even dodged the attack. Instead she stroked a talisman while reciting one of her mystical incantations. A bolt of lightning was about to strike the enraged vampire when a dark figure interrupted the spell.
“Ladies if you're going to fight over this fellow I'll have to ask you to leave the grounds.” Rapture turned his black eyes onto the witch. “None of that in here.” Glancing down at the charm.
Steve had sobered a bit and drug Adrianna to a table. This angered Kalina but she kept her cool. “I had that coffin creeper dead to rights. That's two I owe you and I'm going to take my time.”
“Sounds intriguing unfortunately I'm rather busy right now. So are you, Barron want's us to sit in on a meeting. Can you behave?”
“Am I getting paid?”
“Probably.”
“I'm gonna be so nice.”
“Good because the hippy is invited too.”
Odoko, tensed when he spotted his quarry breaking in on the cat fight. For a man with so many enemies Rapture seemed unconcerned that at any moment his presence could be erased. Now that his search was over he needed food, all that skulking about had worked up a terrible hunger. He crept along a balcony ledge until he spotted an attractive goth with a long slender neck. Silent as the grave he followed until she was alone. A furtive glance revealed no witnesses and he dropped down on the young woman's shoulder.
She looked into his beady rodent eyes and handed him a cheesy treat from her little black purse. “Good work Odoko.”
DEATH AND
DOMINATION CHAPTER 10 THE COUNCIL
Around the huge conference
table sat the most politically powerful vampires in Las Vegas. They
wielded vast control over money and influence. Each had a sizable
force of both vampire and human minions to run their individual
enterprises. After dark Gothic hangouts and night clubs like
Dementia, Pumping Red, Desmodus and Crimson Dawn were all fronts for
there organizations. Barron was never interested in politics he ran
the casino for which each one held and interest. There was always a
dispute over how much control they each had. He was forever
arbitrating to keep the peace. Then you throw in the weres and others
it could be quite strenuous and now zombies.
“Zombies!” Raphael
Exclaimed.
“Yes zombies,” Barron insisted, “at least two so far but according to my assistant Adrianna one was destroyed by the werewolves. Aaron has learned that a corporate jet blew up over the hills and all were lost only the pilot and co pilot's bodies were found. Six others are missing and presumed dead. The only problem is Woody Brown the zombie that wandered in here was on that plane.” Barron watched the gathered to see what their reactions would be. It was as expected.
“Well clean it up. Now what about him?” Raphael pointed a bony finger at Rapture. “I thought he was never to return?”
Rapture bent forward before the council. “I'm only passing through and stopped to repay a debt owed. While here in your domain I've offered to provide any assistance to Barron and the council as you so desire. This zombie business is the work of a necromancer and I too have no liking for such villains. If we are to assume the other zombie was also a passenger on the ill fated jet then four other missing passengers may turn up as walking dead.”
Barron addressed them again. “Yes I agree we can't allow a necromancer to operate here it's big trouble and the werewolves nearly killed Adrianna after a zombie killed a shifter child. I would like your approval to hunt this fiend down and rid us of his taint. I'll need a small group of hunters for the job for which I'll pay them from the casino proceeds.
Rapture raised his hand. “I volunteer to help pro bono as I said I owe my friend here. I would also recommend the services of my associate. Kalina Draco is well versed in such matters as sorcery.”
Kalina was quick to respond. “How about a bonus to whomever captures the black magician?”
Raphael agreed as did the others. A rogue magician in the neighborhood was bad for business.
